I write to thank you for your support and pledge my commitment to continue to work to help Michigan find ways to keep moving forward.
I am very proud of our campaign promoting my vision of rebuilding our public education system, making higher education accessible and affordable for all, and insisting that Michigan must be a welcoming and inclusive state that respects the civil rights and dignity of all our people, including our LGBT children.
More than 1.9 million Michigan citizens agreed. In other years this would have been more than enough. But in a year in which Donald Trump and my opponents played on fears and anxieties, we came up short by 9,000 votes. That is less than one-tenth of one percent of the votes cast in our race.
Our challenge here in Michigan, and our nation, is to dust off, get up, fight for what is right, but also make much more clear and compelling that the understandable concerns folks have about our future and their futures, can best be met by our vision. That the path to jobs and economic opportunity is through education. That the states and communities that are thriving and growing are the most inclusive and diverse.
This is our work for the months and years ahead. I look forward to continuing it with you.
