LANSING- -The Austin for Michigan campaign today announced the endorsement of the Michigan Education Association (MEA) and the American Federation of Teachers Michigan (AFT Michigan), collectively representing 175,000 of Michigan’s front line K-12 and higher education teachers, faculty and staff.
“I am honored to have the support of the men and women doing the most important and difficult work there is, inspiring and equipping the people of Michigan with the skills they need to realize their full potential,” Austin said in accepting the endorsement.
Austin, President of the State Board of Education, pushed for greater investment in K-12 schools and higher education in the FY 2017 budget, helping protect a $60-$120 increase in per-student spending.

“John Austin’s reelection to the State Board of Education is essential,” said Steve Cook, MEA President.  “At a time when too many seek to tear public education down, and attack Michigan’s hard-working teachers, John provides leadership that puts children and their learning first, and he lifts up our school employees.  He understands they are the key drivers of increased student achievement and higher education attainment that Michigan so urgently needs.”

Austin, appointed to Governor Snyder’s  21st Century Education Commission in May, has pledged to push the 25-member group to provide public educators the support and tools they need to help all children in Michigan get the education they deserve and realize the promise of a higher education.

"'John Austin is championing the right solutions to rebuild our education system” said David Hecker, AFT Michigan President. “His leadership is critical in fighting for the resources, academic standards and support for educators needed to provide every child in Detroit and across Michigan the quality education they deserve."
Today’s announcement adds Michigan’s front-line educators to the broad coalition of business, labor, education, higher education and civic leaders endorsing Austin’s forward looking and bridge-building leadership. LANSING- -Top officials of the state’s education and higher education leadership organizations gathered at an event in Lansing yesterday  to support John Austin’s reelection to the State Board of Education (SBE), joining a growing chorus of elected officials, education, business, labor faith and community leaders rallying behind the SBE president.

“John Austin plays a unique role in Michigan, bringing public and private stakeholders together to help us make headway on our state’s top priority: making sure many more people access, and find success through higher education,”  Robert Levebre, President of  Michigan's Independent Colleges and Universities,” told the crowd.

Austin recently brought together the state’s business, labor, education, and higher education leaders with Governor Snyder's team and bipartisan legislators to forge a  new roadmap to reduce higher education cost, help more citizens of all ages complete work-world valued credentials and put Michigan back among top 10 states in higher education attainment, see“Reaching for Opportunity” available at www.MiTalentGoal2025.org.

“John is an action oriented educational leader who converts the best research in education into the policies and practices that practitioners in the field use to improve student success,” said William C. Miller Ph.D, Executive Director of the Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators (MAISA).

With a record in Michigan spanning more than 20 years including work with three Governors from both parties, Austin has spearheaded initiatives to put in place some of the nation’s highest and most  rigorous education standards for k-12 schools, launched Kalamazoo and other community “Promise” programs, created college access support networks, the Michigan Merit Scholarship, and the 21st Century Jobs Fund to drive new business growth out of the innovation of Michigan’s research universities.

“John Austin for years has proven himself to be an architect, champion and facilitator of an agenda to strengthen Michigan’s educational and talent development system”, offered Dan Hurley, Chief Executive Officer, Michigan Association of State Universities. “This is the type of statewide leadership that will be critical to ensure that Michigan meets its educational attainment goals in the future.”

Tuesday’s endorsements come a week after Mayor Mike Duggan and Detroit Coalition leadership meeting at Mackinac Island all endorsed Austin for re-election given his central role in championing the needed solutions for Detroit school children and children across Michigan.
